War as Horror, War as Videogame

There may be no sadder piece of video than watching US soldiers attacking Iraqis from helicopters, killing a Reuters cameraman and his driver, as well as about ten more men, wounding two children, and attacking the van coming to rescue them from the air assault. War is hell, and this is an absurd and horrific segment.

But if anyone thinks that the videogame culture, the distancing of us from the other through media, is not present, then check out the “ha ha” and other exclamations that erupt from time to time in the assault process. Somehow it’s fitting that this video is released the same week as the iPad.

May we as a country have the courage to face up to who we are, and to what we are becoming.
