Activism:

Should certain imagery evoke responses in readers, and the readers want to do something about a situation, there should be available links so that financial contributions, political messages, volunteering, voting, etc., are available recourses. How much would it cost to help the very people depicted? Can one click on the image and give money directly? Or sports equipment? Or second-hand books? Can one click on the image and find out about the various organizations trying to help these individuals and those like them? Can one volunteer to help? Is there a way to send messages to political representatives, attaching the picture as part of the document? Or to friends, forming ad hoc political groups? An election every four years in which one is asked to choose between two usually uninspiring candidates might be replaced by political campaigns based upon issues - to intervene in Rwanda or not? to support a healthcare initiative? And it is then up to allied, non-journalistic sites to make sure that what the reader/viewer does can have some impact. Media do not exist simply to divert and increase anxiety, but to effect change - a statement that today seems almost radical.
